Meditation

Meditation

This is one of the recommended treatments for any psychiatric condition, but do Christians meditate? These days meditation is associated with eastern religions. Meditation is a western word and it is something Christians used to do. It is said that prayer is talking to God and meditation is listening. I would define meditation as a focused state on God’s Truth.
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
“I lift my hands up to your commands, which I love, and meditate on your decrees.” Psalm 119:48
But it is not enough to contemplate Gods Word in the Bible. You have to work the word of God in your life. This requires some introspective practice. The process of introspection gives us an understanding of our selves and it is in finding the nature of our sinful thoughts and deeds then handing them over to God that we train our soul to master our minds and bodies.
The eastern religions refer to our capacity to observe our selves as the Third Eye. Biologically this located at the penal gland between the frontal lobes of the brain. This is a part of your endocrine system and is most active during sleep.
A Buddhist Monk once gave me a simple meditation technique to heighten our introspective nature. It is easy and only requires ten minutes a day twice a day. In the morning simply sit comfortably and relax. Concentrate on your breathing taking long slow breaths in through the nose and out threw the mouth. Count the seconds between first starting to inhale and finishing exhalation. Hand this day to God, ask him to come into this day and guide you through the pits and snares ahead of you. Look at the day before, what did you do well, what could you have done better. Offer your sins to the saviour then clear your mind again. Look at the day ahead of you, what will you be doing, who will you meet, what problems you might encounter and how will you deal with them. Again clear your mind and give praise to God, then go and take on the day. At the end of the day repeat the exercise. Again sit comfortably and relax. Clear your mind, give the day to God, look at the day behind you, clear your mind and hand over your sins, look at the day ahead of you tomorrow, clear your thoughts and give praise to God. Ten minuets twice a day for a closer contact with the will of God and the power to carry that out.
“Meditate within your heart, on your bed and be still.” Psalms 4:4
For my self I find I have a lot of problems being comfortable sitting still. But at a private clinic I was taught a method of achieving mindful meditation while walking.
While walking;
First shift your attention to the feel of the ground beneath your feet. Get a feel for what you are walking on.
Shift your attention to the movement of your ankle, then knee, then hip, then wrist, then elbow, then shoulder, then head. Get a feel for the motion of your body.
Look around you and find three details of what you see. Find more details until you are ready to think.
Then look at the day ahead of you….
But meditation doesn’t have to be taken so seriously. I can find my self in a mediative state; star gazing, gardening or working on my boat. My mum paddles a canoe or does the washing. Winston Churchill liked to lay bricks. Some might find it reading the Bible. The key to good meditation is to focus and listen.
