Take this simple proposition. Every state has sufficient cause. Sounds reasonable? But when we say every state we include every state of mind and consciousness and everything that drives us. So where dose this leave our impression of free will, our pride and shame. You have two choices. Accept the logic and reason that says you are just a chemical process with no control over your thoughts and actions. Or accept that logic and reason have their limitations and there are greater things than cause and effect.
Then you take a purely scientific approach to psychology and expect me to take you seriously. “It’s just a chemical imbalance in the brain” the psychiatrist maintains. This stance is of some value to the doctor who is only interested in prescribing medications. But it has to be taken into account that the mind still remains out side the boundaries of science. A lot is known about the chemistry of the brain, but how it is that these chemical functions connect us to the human experience remains a mystery. As it is impossible to test the chemical states of the brain while the brain is still in the patents head, any diagnosis is pure supposition. Also the effects of the medications on a functioning brain remain out of reach. In this physical environment to claim psychology is an exact science is absurd. Clearly the function of the mind remains in the realm of spirituality and philosophy.
The psychologist on the other hand utilises the human mind’s capacity to take charge of it’s own thinking. He dose this by breaking the mind into individual functions in the way an engineer looks at the individual functions of an engine. While this method reflects the scientific method it is by no means science. States of mind are not observable facts. While the psychologist tries to get a feel for the patents condition, he dose not actually feel the patents condition, much to the relief of the psychologist. When the psychologist asks the patent to rate their feelings on a scale, the result is not a solid fact.
The human mind remains intangible in every respect. Science has taken a prominent role in our modern thinking. It has given us a much better understanding of the world around us and produced some impressive miracles in the process. But it has to be understood science has it’s limitations. Science was not meant to be believed in. It can’t give us truth, or even proof, proof is an exclusive property of math’s. Psychology is not a science it is a philosophy. As such it is greatly limited by being confined within the limits of science.
